Hello world


 I thought I'd post a few renders of the earth assignment I give my students in my Texture and Lighting class at Ex'pression College.  This was the outcome of my in-class demo of setting up semi-complex shader networks.  The whole setup is a series of shaders that layer over top of 3 spheres.  The end result produces clouds that cast shadows on the earth's surface, city lights on the unlit side, and a faked volumetric atmosphere.

You can download the ridiculously hi-res textures I used from NASA here.  This earth was made in Maya, although I just found a recent tutorial on doing a very similar setup in Blender here.
